At Reaktor, we believe the best kind of professional growth happens when we’re learning alongside other experts. That’s why we decided to collect our tried-and-tested professional growth methods into a simple handbook. Our new guide allows you to conduct career growth discussions for peers or friends. Become a coach or mentor, or challenge someone in your life to give you a growth discussion.

Terms in short

Performance reviews are annual or otherwise regular appraisals at work. They take place between a supervisor and an employee concerning that employee’s tasks, working conditions, skills, and skill development.

Career growth discussions are a tool for professional skill development and goal setting. Growth discussions differ from performance reviews in that there is no boss-employee relationship present. Growth discussions can be given either by mentors, experts in the same field as the participant, or by coaches, independent actors who facilitate the discussion.

Growth discussions are designed to guide the participant to ideate and identify new forms of professional growth, areas of expertise, skills, techniques, working methods, and other career enhancing endeavors. Growth discussions are never about salaries or appraisals of someone’s work – we recommend other discussion formats for those purposes. Growth discussions always result in the drawing up of a plan of action for the participant.

What's this about?

At Reaktor, we take professional growth seriously. We believe that all experts deserve the best possible type of career coaching. That’s why, over the years, we’ve spent a tremendous amount of time thinking about what makes career growth discussions valuable. And we’ve learned a great deal, both from our internal conversations as well as our interactions with the public.

In the fall of 2018, we decided to put some hypotheses to the test. We organized a public-facing campaign where Reaktor’s most senior experts coached people from other firms through growth discussions. The feedback from these career growth sessions was so delightful and enthusiastic that we decided to share our methods with all of you, giving you the tools to organize growth discussions with co-workers and friends.

“This session made a big difference to me. I would have liked even more of these discussions. Conducting this session with a third party made the talking easier as I didn’t have to worry about saying anything that would affect my current job.”
